  • Condition: Used condition. One is missing a tusk, eye and toe nail. The wood base and upright piece of wood are in very nice condition. There is a sliding door on the inside of the bookend that is removable for stashing. One of the doors is missing on one bookend but could be easily made from the specs of the one remaining. The wood is a heavy hardwood that has stress cracks from age but everything remains very sturdy and strong.

    ANTIQUE HAND CARVED WOODEN BOOKENDS
    HIDDEN STASH COMPARTMENTS
    TUSKS & TOENAILS ON ELEPHANTS
    This is an extraordinary antique set of bookends.  Each elephant is hand carved with nice ears, eyes, and body surface details giving them life.  The elephants have inset eyes, tusks and toenails made we assume of bovine bone.  Elephants are held onto their bases by straight headed screws.  The vertical pieces of wood are dovetailed together and can be disassembled (which they will be for shipping purposes).   Probably one of the neatest things about these pieces are the hidden compartment in the vertical board.  One of the bookends has the door that slides out of place to stash while the other is missing but could be made from the specs of the one remaining.
